MAZON Unveils Digital Hunger Museum: Navigating America’s Legacy of Hunger

MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger has unveiled The Hunger Museum, a digital project that delves into the history of food insecurity in America and seeks to inspire a future free from hunger. A national organization dedicated to ending hunger across various faiths in the US and Israel, MAZON aims to create a broad minded food policy centered on the belief that no one should go without.

Launched virtually in March, the museum is presented as if it were situated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Its location near centers of power serves to remind viewers of the importance of advocacy. The decision to create a digital resource was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, recognizing the increased influence of virtual platforms.

Designed by architects, The Hunger Museum‘s website utilizes “2.5-D” technology to provide visitors with a personal, immersive, and dynamic experience. By highlighting key moments following a 100 year timeline, the exhibit explores complex cultural, economic, and political histories of hunger in America. Naama Haviv, Vice President of Community Engagement at MAZON, believes that understanding these histories is critical to ideating future solutions.

Haviv emphasizes the need for robust government funding to ultimately solve the issue of hunger. She maintains that only government has the necessary scope and scale to tackle such a pervasive issue.

Since its launch, The Hunger Museum has generated considerable interest from various individuals, organizations, faith groups, professional groups, and architectural podcasts.

The virtual nature of the museum offers the optionality to introduce new exhibits and tours consistently. Their overarching aim will stay true to inspiring young people in the fight for food security. “The joy of an entirely virtual museum is that we can add a wing anytime we want!” adds Haviv.
