Addressing Hunger in Maine: The Initiatives of a Rockland Food Pantry

Anne Cogger, a retired social worker from St. George, dedicates her Monday mornings to volunteering at Area Interfaith Outreach Food and Energy Assistance (AIO) in Rockland. Witnessing the impact of rising costs of everyday life on individuals, Cogger felt compelled to take action rather than remain a passive observer. She noticed an increase in people seeking assistance at AIO, which she attributes to the escalating prices of electricity, heating, and housing over the past few years.

Cogger emphasizes the importance of recognizing the need within one’s own community, as it is easy to be unaware of the struggles faced by others. AIO, Knox County’s largest food pantry, originated more than three decades ago when local churches united to address the issue of hunger. Today, AIO serves residents throughout the area and provides support to smaller local pantries. With pandemic-era assistance programs gradually winding down, AIO has been serving approximately 300 families per week.

Joe Ryan, the executive director of AIO, explains that the organization is designed like a grocery store. Members receive tickets to manage overcrowding, then use a member card to scan items when it’s their turn to shop. The pantry provides grocery carts to simulate the experience of shopping in a traditional market, fostering a sense of dignity and choice for individuals and families in need. Ryan notes that AIO is often filled with laughter, chatter, and the joyful sounds of children playing—a departure from the somber atmosphere typically associated with food pantries.

Keisha Beal, AIO‘s administrative assistant, has a personal connection to the organization. She grew up in a food-insecure household and relied on AIO for support as both a child and later as a mother. Beal emphasizes that there should be no shame or embarrassment in seeking help and believes that hunger should not carry a stigma.

AIO purchases all of its food from Good Shepherd Food Bank. To support Good Shepherd Food Bank, you can donate to NEWS CENTER Maine’s 2023 Feed Maine telethon. Additionally, direct support for AIO is also welcomed.
