Attention sustainable packaging companies: There’s still an opportunity to participate in Google’s Single-Use Plastics Challenge! This initiative allows selected finalists to present their innovative packaging solutions to Google, helping the tech giant reduce its plastic waste.

Alarming statistics surrounding plastic production and waste highlight the urgency of finding sustainable alternatives. The U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) revealed that plastic production has outpaced that of any other material since the 1970s. Annually, the world generates approximately 400 million tonnes of plastic waste, with packaging accounting for around 36% of total plastic usage.

Despite ongoing efforts to address the issue, UNEP estimates that 9 to 14 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans each year. If current trends persist, this number could triple by 2040, posing a severe threat to aquatic ecosystems.

To tackle this problem, Google initiated its Challenge, seeking reusable serviceware and packaging solutions that can facilitate the transition to a circular economy. The selected solutions will be implemented in Google’s cafes and MicroKitchens, informing part of the company’s broader objective to completely eliminate single-use plastics from its onsite food operations.

Mike Werner, Head of Circular Economy for Google’s Global Sustainability Team, and Matt Hood, Senior Director of the Google Food Program, emphasize that reducing and ultimately eliminating single-use plastics is crucial in combating global plastic pollution.

For interested participants, Google provides a comprehensive list of plastic-free packaging options on its interest form, which companies can explore.

Applicants should ensure that their products comply with all relevant United States federal, state, and local food safety regulations. Additionally, they must meet the health, environmental, social, and financial standards established by the Google Food program. Sustainability claims must be substantiated by third-party certification.

The deadline for applications is May 30, 2023. This is an excellent opportunity for sustainable packaging companies to contribute to the global fight against plastic waste and collaborate with Google on its mission for a more environmentally friendly future.
