Singapore recently became the epicenter of global environmental innovation as it hosted The Earthshot Prize 2023. This prestigious event, held in partnership with Temasek Trust, Temasek, GenZero, and Conservation International, brought together a week of thought leadership, innovation, and impact, showcasing the best in the fight for a sustainable world.
The awards ceremony, held at the Mediacorp Campus in Singapore, was a glittering affair, with Acción Andina, GRST, WildAid Marine Program, S4S Technologies, and Boomitra being announced as the winners. The ceremony, featuring a constellation of stars and renowned personalities, was broadcast globally across various networks, including BBC in the UK, PBS in the US, Mediacorp’s Channel 5 in Singapore, and The Earthshot Prize’s YouTube channel.
In what was a first for the awards, the ceremony was part of a larger ‘Earthshot Week‘, a series of events held in Singapore that included forums, networking opportunities, and a youth programme aimed at fostering young leaders from Southeast Asia in climate action.
The week kicked off with Prince William’s visit to the ‘Rain Vortex’ at The Jewel, symbolizing the start of Earthshot Week. This was followed by a day of masterclasses for 120 youth leaders from across Southeast Asia, hosted by partners such as Bloomberg L.P, YouTube, Arup, and the Singapore Fashion Council. The discussions continued at the National Gallery during the Global Alliance Forum, which provided a platform for finalists and partners to discuss scaling up their solutions.
The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony on Tuesday was the highlight of the week. Prior to the event, Prince William met with the 2023 Finalists at the Gardens by the Bay’s ‘Supertrees’. The ceremony itself was a celebration of environmental innovation, with award presenters and performers including Hannah Waddingham, Sterling K. Brown, Cate Blanchett, Lana Condor, Robert Irwin, Donnie Yen, Nomzamo Mbatha, Bastille, and One Republic.
Post-ceremony, the inaugural Earthshot+ event saw global leaders, business executives, and climate experts convene for a day of discussions aimed at enhancing collective impact in climate change mitigation. The week concluded with youth programme attendees participating in a tree-planting activity as part of the Nature Society and National Parks’ rewilding programme in Singapore.
The Earthshot Prize 2023 in Singapore not only recognized the innovative efforts of environmental champions but also underscored the city state’s position as a hub for sustainable innovation and climate action in Southeast Asia. As the world grapples with the urgent need for environmental stewardship, events like The Earthshot Prize play a crucial role in inspiring and catalyzing change across the globe.
