MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Secretary Tom Vilsack of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a significant investment initiative aimed at bolstering agricultural producers and food businesses with the aim of enhancing markets, job creation, price control, and nutrition improvement.
We’re here to underscore the important role that local and regional food systems play for American agriculture and farmers, and to announce $320 million in a variety of loans and grants designed to strengthen the supply chain, enhance the resilience of the food system, and create numerous opportunities for mid- and small-sized operators,” Secretary Vilsack emphasized.
The Fresh Start Market, known for its offering of fresh fruits, vegetables, and products cultivated by immigrant farmers, operates with the support of federal officials, including the Department of Agriculture.
Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig praised the partnership with federal officials, including the Department of Agriculture, for their efforts in addressing food insecurity and promoting healthier food choices within the city.
One notable recipient of these funds is North Country Growers in New Hampshire, slated to receive a $19.9 million guaranteed loan to establish and operate a 20-acre hydroponic greenhouse for year-round production of lettuce and leafy greens. The project aims to yield 30 million heads of lettuce annually, destined for local grocery stores, restaurants, and distribution throughout the Northeast, thereby creating 84 jobs.
The investment also extends to other businesses, including a meat market and bison processing facility expanding their production capabilities, a berry processor acquiring equipment for increased production capacity, and a plant-based yogurt manufacturer and cold storage facility broadening sustainable options for consumers.
Secretary Vilsack underscored the economic benefits of strengthening market opportunities for small- and mid-sized producers, emphasizing that greater market competition can lead to more competitive prices and reduced costs associated with food distribution to consumers.
