In a step toward a more sustainable future for school nutrition programs, Eco-Products and DNO Produce have joined forces to launch a compostable packaging solution designed specifically for K–12 cafeterias. The innovation – a 4-ounce molded fiber cup sealed with a plant-based lidding film – is poised to make a meaningful impact on how fresh produce is delivered to students.
Crafted with renewable resources, the new cup and lid combination offers schools a practical and environmentally responsible way to serve cut fruits and vegetables. Once the produce is placed inside, the container is sealed with a lidding film made entirely from plant materials. Both components meet strict compostability criteria: the cup is BPI certified, and the film conforms to ASTM standards.
The partnership is a natural evolution for Columbus, Ohio based DNO Produce, a leading distributor of fresh-cut and bulk fruits and vegetables that services school nutrition programs across 17 states. With a mission to provide thousands of K–12 students daily with fresh produce, DNO has long emphasized operational efficiency and freshness – but now, it’s turning its focus toward sustainable delivery.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for individually packaged produce surged, and we saw an opportunity to make some changes,” said Alex DiNovo, President of DNO Produce. “Our transition to more sustainable packaging is the culmination of a multi-year effort to align our operations with our sustainability goals. Eco-Products has been an incredible partner, and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of this revolutionary product.”
The shift also responds to a persistent challenge facing school nutrition programs: staffing shortages. Many districts continue to grapple with limited personnel, making it increasingly difficult to wash, slice, and portion fresh produce in house. By offering pre packaged, ready to serve options, DNO helps schools sidestep these operational hurdles while still meeting nutritional standards.
For Eco-Products, a company known for its leadership in sustainable foodservice packaging, the collaboration represents the best of what can happen when values align. “It is fantastic to see this new cup and lid solution making its way to schools across DNO’s footprint,” said Wendell Simonson, Director of Marketing at Eco-Products. “Projects like this only happen when both sides are truly committed to a new way of doing things, and that’s exactly what is on display here.”
As schools nationwide look for ways to modernize their meal programs without compromising sustainability goals, this innovative packaging could offer a glimpse into the future. Compostable, convenient, and designed with both students and the planet in mind, it signals a growing movement toward climate-conscious choices in institutional foodservice.
