A New Venture in Cultivated Meat Driven by Biomedical Research

Omeat: A Pioneering Step Towards Sustainable Meat Production, Launched by Terasaki Institute

The Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) has proudly launched its new venture, Omeat. This forward-looking spinout company is set to revolutionize the global meat production landscape with sustainable, cost-effective, and humane methods.

Using advanced technology conceived by TIBI’s leading scientists under the guidance of its esteemed CEO, Dr. Ali Khademhosseini, Omeat specializes in cultivating meat. The process involves collecting regenerative factors from healthy, living cows. With TIBI‘s expertise in tissue engineering and cell culturing techniques, Omeat has developed remarkable innovations, including unique microcarriers for cell differentiation and a more affordable alternative to fetal bovine serum for growth media.

Such advances are pivotal to the global meat production industry, addressing environmental concerns associated with traditional beef production. Research indicates that meat sourced from animal cells can lead to reductions of 92% in global warming, 93% in air pollution, and save up to 95% of land and 78% of water.

Pushing the boundaries, Omeat has integrated an eco-friendly farm with free-range cows, further minimizing their ecological footprint. Looking forward, they are scaling their operations, aiming to bring cultivated meat to a broader audience, in response to the rising consumer demand. Omeat’s technology, versatile in nature, offers potential in producing various meats such as pork, chicken, and fish, and can be integrated into existing agricultural setups.

Dr. Khademhosseini shared his optimism, stating, “Omeat is a testament to TIBI’s vision. It remarkably addresses environmental and consumer demands. We’re eager to introduce more such ventures that tackle major healthcare and ecological issues.”

Omeat’s journey is on an accelerated trajectory, with a pilot plant in development and its team rapidly growing. Concurrently, Omeat is actively seeking regulatory approval, engaging in discussions with key authorities, including the FDA and USDA.
