Midwest retailer Meijer has expanded the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to its Meijer app (App Store | Google Play). This new capability allows SNAP participants to pay for their app orders using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, increasing convenience for purchases of fresh produce, milk, and other groceries. This initiative coincides with the summer distribution of $40 in EBT benefits per SNAP-eligible child and aligns with Meijer’s broader efforts to support SNAP customers.
In April, Meijer doubled the discount on select milk products, offering 40 percent off any brand or size of 1 percent and fat-free milk. This move follows Meijer’s selection as the largest retailer in its six-state footprint to partner on Healthy Fluid Milk Incentives (HFMI) projects, established by the 2018 Farm Bill to promote milk as part of a healthy diet. Meijer was awarded a grant by Auburn University’s Hunger Solutions Institute for the “Add Milk” initiative, incentivizing SNAP participants to purchase fluid milk.
Additional efforts by Meijer to support SNAP participants include:
Produce Discounts: Continuing a 10 percent discount on qualifying produce purchases, thanks to a 2022 USDA waiver.
Home Delivery: Offering free home delivery to increase access to healthy foods, a service introduced in November 2022. That same year, Meijer began accepting SNAP benefits for Pickup and Home Delivery orders on Meijer.com.
Flashfood: Meijer became the first retailer in 2023 to accept SNAP benefits through the Flashfood app, allowing customers to purchase surplus close-dated food at a deep discount.
The Meijer app, available for free on iOS and Android devices, enables SNAP participants to shop for over 100,000 items, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, and pantry staples. Customers can link their EBT card to their Meijer account online or at any Meijer Customer Service desk, using it as a payment method for various delivery and pickup options. This initiative aims to make healthy foods more accessible to SNAP families, reinforcing Meijer’s commitment to supporting community health and nutrition.
